Travertine Honing & Polishing in Austin, TX

Travertine floors and surfaces are valued for their natural appearance and durability, but over time they can lose their smoothness and visual consistency. Foot traffic, scratches, etching, and general wear often leave travertine looking dull, uneven, or worn. Professional travertine honing and polishing restores the surface, improving both the feel and appearance of the stone.

Santa Fe Floor Cleaning & Stone Care provides professional travertine honing and polishing services in Austin using proven restoration methods designed specifically for natural stone. Our process restores the stone itself rather than relying on topical coatings or temporary solutions.

What Travertine Polishing Involves

Travertine polishing is a multi-step process that begins with honing. Polishing alone cannot correct surface damage or uneven wear.

Honing removes light scratches, etching, and surface irregularities while flattening the stone. Polishing then refines the honed surface to achieve the desired level of sheen. Together, these steps restore a uniform finish and bring back the natural beauty of the travertine.

Travertine Honing Services

Travertine honing is the process of resurfacing the stone using diamond abrasives to remove scratches, etching, and wear. Many clients request honing only to achieve a smooth, matte or low-sheen finish without the higher reflection of polishing.

Honing can be performed as a standalone service or as the first step in a full polishing process. The level of honing determines the final appearance, ranging from a soft matte finish to a higher satin finish.

When Travertine Honing and Polishing Is Needed

Travertine honing and polishing is recommended when the surface shows:

  • Dull or uneven areas caused by foot traffic
  • Scratches or light surface damage
  • Etch marks from acidic substances such as wine, citrus, or household cleaners
  • Loss of shine or patchy appearance
  • A rough or gritty texture underfoot

Even if travertine appears clean, honing may still be necessary to correct wear and achieve consistent results before polishing.

Our Travertine Honing and Polishing Process

Each project is customized based on the condition of the stone, the level of damage, and the desired finish.

1. Evaluation and Finish Selection

We assess etching, scratches, and wear patterns and determine the appropriate starting grit level. More heavily damaged floors require starting at a lower grit to fully remove surface damage.

2. Deep Cleaning

We begin with a deep cleaning using truck-mounted hot water extraction and alkaline cleaners to remove embedded dirt and residues.

3. Diamond Honing Process

We use diamond-embedded honing pads to resurface the travertine. Multiple passes are made, gradually increasing in grit level until the desired finish is achieved.

Typical honing progression includes:

  • 220 grit
  • 400 grit
  • 800 grit
  • 1800 grit
  • 3000 grit

This process removes etching, scratches, and uneven wear while flattening the stone at a microscopic level.

4. Finish Selection (Honed or Polished)

  • Low to high honed finishes are achieved within the honing stages
  • A polished finish is created by refining the surface further to approximately 8500 grit

Honing is a necessary step before polishing to ensure the surface is properly prepared and damage-free.

5. Wet Process and Slurry Extraction

Our process is completely wet, meaning there is no airborne dust. Instead, a stone slurry is produced, which we continuously extract during the process using professional-grade equipment.

6. Post-Cleaning Rinse

After honing and polishing, we perform a final hot water extraction rinse with no chemicals to remove any remaining residue.

7. Optional Sealing

A penetrating sealer may be applied to help protect against staining.

We no longer rely on traditional polishing powders (such as 5X) for travertine floors. Advances in diamond abrasive technology allow us to achieve consistent, high-quality results through the honing process alone, resulting in a cleaner and more controlled finish.

Why Professional Travertine Polishing Matters

Travertine is a calcium-based stone and can be easily damaged by improper cleaning methods or incorrect polishing techniques. Acidic products and abrasive tools can cause etching or permanent surface damage.

Professional honing and polishing uses stone-safe methods and equipment designed to restore the travertine rather than cover up damage. This results in a longer-lasting and more consistent finish.

Surfaces We Polish

Our travertine honing and polishing services are available for:

  • Travertine floors
  • Showers and bathroom surfaces
  • Countertops and vanities
  • Fireplaces and accent walls
  • Residential and commercial properties

Caring for Polished Travertine

Proper care helps maintain the appearance of polished or honed travertine. We recommend using a pH-neutral stone cleaner, avoiding acidic or abrasive products, and cleaning spills promptly. Periodic professional maintenance may be recommended depending on traffic and use.

Honing vs. Polishing: What’s the Difference?

Honing and polishing are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different stages of the same process. Honed travertine has a smooth surface with little to no shine and is often chosen for a more natural or slip-resistant look. Polished travertine reflects more light and enhances the stone’s color and movement. Both finishes are achieved through the honing process, with polishing providing additional refinement.
  • Honing removes damage and creates a smooth, matte to satin finish
  • Polishing refines the honed surface to increase reflection and shine
Many clients choose honing only for a natural look, while others prefer polishing for a higher-gloss finish. Both options start with the same foundational honing process.

When Honing Only Is the Right Choice

Honing may be recommended without polishing when:
  • You prefer a matte or low-sheen finish
  • Slip resistance is a priority
  • The floor has moderate wear but does not require a high-gloss finish
  • You want a more natural, less reflective appearance

Very knowledgeable, professional and punctual! We purchased a nine year old home in Sun City, all tile floors with two carpeted bedrooms. The home had been well cared for but the floors needed attention. Mr. Young came out, measured everything and visited with us, made suggestions and then clearly explained the process. We received a very fair quote and all the work was done well within a tight time frame. The floors are stunning! He also did a lovely job on a huge, 40 year old wool oriental carpet. We highly recommend Santa Fe Floor Care!!!
