What are the Characteristics of Slate?
Slate is a metamorphic rock formed from the alteration of shale or mudstone through heat and pressure. It is an ideal material for roofing, flooring and various other applications. Slate can either be smooth or rough (Cleft) and can be difficult to maintain if not properly cared for. Slate is very porous and needs to be cleaned and sealed regularly in order to keep up with the general maintenance the stone requires.
How to Clean Slate?
The Marble Institute of America recommends cleaning stone surfaces, including slate, with a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent mixed with warm water. It’s important to avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that can damage the stone.
Do I need to Seal my Slate?
According to the Natural Stone Institute “Slate used in flooring or countertops may benefit from sealing to enhance stain resistance and Additionally, the type of sealer used can impact the stone’s appearance and maintenance needs.” There are two main types of sealants for slate that I recommend. Clear Impregnating sealer used primarily for protection and impregnating enhancing sealers that protect as well as darken or enrich the natural color of the stone. For outdoor applications you typically want to use a solvent based sealer which is more durable and can hold up to the eliminates better such as rain and UV radiation.
