Marble Floor Polishing Austin, TX — Restoring a 50-Year-Old Floor
This marble floor polishing Austin, TX project began with a 50-year-old marble floor that had suffered significant damage from improper cleaning. Marble floors are stunning and elegant, but they require proper care to maintain their beauty — and this one tested our expertise like few others.
How to Restore Marble Floors?
We were able to remove the etching and restore the marble to how it looked when new using a very careful process. We first used diamond-embedded resin honing pads to resurface the marble. These pads grind away the damaged layers of the marble and reveal a fresh, smooth surface underneath. This step needs to be repeated several times, using a finer grit with each pass.
How Do You Fix an Etched Marble Floor?
The grout lines and the marble floor were badly worn. The damage happened after an acidic solution was used to clean the grout, which stained the marble and left visible etchings and dull-looking spots. Needless to say, the homeowners were left reeling from the damage. The fix is the honing and polishing process above — but the best cure is prevention: only use pH-neutral cleaners made for stone when doing regular maintenance.
Can Marble Floors Be Polished?
After completing six passes of honing with diamond-embedded honing pads, it was time to polish. We used a circular hogs hair polishing pad along with a calcite stone polish. This is a very technical process, and there’s a real risk of re-etching the marble if it isn’t properly neutralized with an alkaline solution afterward.
How Do You Maintain Marble Floors?
It’s important to use a pH-neutral cleaner for everyday marble maintenance. It’s equally important to have your marble and grout professionally cleaned and sealed on a yearly basis for regular upkeep.
Can Marble Floors Be Cleaned?
Yes — with the right approach. Marble should only be cleaned with pH-neutral, stone-safe products, and professionally cleaned and sealed yearly to prevent the kind of etching and staining seen in this project.
