Each one of our experts has 10 to 15 years in the stone restoration industry so you know you will get a experienced pro every time. In this case study I explain how we achieve a glass like finish on this marble floor.
Marble Polishing Estimate and Consultation
Prior to every job a proper walk through and estimate is provided. We gathered as much information as possible from the client. In this case the client owns and operates a catering service out of the property and the floor had become dulled due to constant cooking spills, abrasion from walking traffic and improper cleaning products. According to the Natural Stone Institute abrasive cleaners, acidic solutions like vinegar or lemon juice, or bleach are all improper cleaning solutions and can seriously damage the stone surface. At Santa Fe Floor Care we always try to educate the client and recommend PH neutral stone cleaners. After we take measurements we provide the client with a digital breakdown of the recommended service and a cost based off of square footage or time. In this case it was very clear that the stone would need to be completely resurfaced and then polished and sealed in order to restore the factory finish.
Marble Honing
The first step is to hone the floor with a low grit diamond embedded pad. This is a west process that uses a weighted pad driver, rotary machine and plenty of water. The stone becomes soft and malleable and the initial top layer is essentially removed. This process is similar to sanding but we use water and specialized honing pads designed for natural stone floors.
Grout Cleaning
After the initial honing pass I always perform a deep cleaning of the grout lines. I like to do the deep cleaning process early on so that I can use a slightly stronger alkaline cleaner without worrying about damaging the final result. In this case I scrubbed the grout lines with an alkaline product and then rinsed and extracted using out truck mounted hot water steam machine.
Honing and Polishing
After the deep cleaning is complete I go back to the honing process I complete three to four more passes each time succeeding to a higher grit level. Once I complete my final pass the stone is now ready to be polished. It is always recommended to rinse and extract after each honing pass, but I absolutely critical that you do a thorough rinsing before you polish. This is to insure there is not stone residue that can get in the way of the polish.
Marble Polishing
Polishing marble takes lots of patients and requires 2 technicians. You will need to rinse and extract as you polish so that the stone so that the polishing powder does not sit to long. Technician one will operate the rotary machine and apply the polishing powder using a hogs hair pad and plenty of water, while technician two will operate the truck mounted extraction machine. Appy the recommended amount of polishing powder and scrub it into the floor with the rotary machine. Work in small linear areas and spend about 30 seconds per square foot. After completing an area make sure to rinse well.
PH Neutral Stone Cleaner
After the Polishing pass is complete it is time for the post cleaning. Use a clean white pad, PH neutral stone cleaner and rotary machine to scrub the floor. Make sure to always work from the furthest point back so that you don’t walk on your finished work. Dry the Floor with fans and clean towels. You may want to dry buff the floor with a clean white pad to insure there are no water marks. Always check for re-etching and inconsistencies in the reflection.
Marble Sealing
The final step is to seal the marble and grout. Make sure to use a high grade impregnating sealer. According to StoneTech According to Stonetech sealers do not completely protect marble from being etched so it is very important to avoid spilling acidic foods and drinks.
