Restoration of Badly Etched Travertine Bathroom Floor in Austin, Texas
Background
At Santa Fe Floor Care, we recently took on a travertine restoration project in Austin, Texas. A homeowner had used a highly acidic cleaning product on their travertine bathroom floor, causing significant damage. The acid removed the finish from the tiles, leaving them dull and discolored. Here’s how we restored the floor to its original beauty.
Step 1: Honing the Floor
To begin the restoration process, we honed the floor using diamond-embedded honing pads. This step is crucial for removing the damaged surface layer. We made several passes, starting with a 100-grit pad and gradually working up to a 3000-grit pad. Each pass helped to smooth the surface and prepare it for the next stage.
Honing with different grits ensures that the floor is evenly smoothed and any scratches or etches are removed. The higher the grit, the finer the surface becomes, resulting in a polished finish.
Step 2: Cleaning with Alkaline Stone Cleaners
After honing, the next step was to thoroughly clean the floor. We used alkaline stone cleaners, which are safe and effective for travertine. These cleaners help to remove any remaining debris and prepare the surface for sealing.
Using the right cleaner is essential to avoid further damage. Alkaline cleaners are non-acidic and gentle on natural stone surfaces, ensuring a thorough cleaning without harming the tiles.
Step 3: Sealing the Floor
Finally, we sealed the floor using penetrating stone sealers. This step is vital for protecting the travertine from future damage. The sealer penetrates the stone, providing a protective barrier against stains and spills.
Sealing the floor helps to maintain its appearance and prolongs its lifespan. It also makes the floor easier to clean and maintain in the future.
The Result
By following these steps, we successfully restored the travertine bathroom floor to its original condition. The homeowner was thrilled with the result, and their bathroom now looks as good as new.
